Developed by Just Develop It, MyPCBackup is an online data backup service with a sleek interface and excellent mobile features. While the desktop application and the online account manager are effective backup tools, the biggest setback with MyPCBackup is the many add-ons and upgrades you are required to purchase if you want features that are comparable to the best online data backup services. These additional purchases, which aren't indicated before you sign up, include features like supercharged backups that increase upload time, sync folder space up to 20GB, provide access to previous versions, perform hourly backups, have recycle bin protection, grant automatic video backup and more.
The most important feature that MyPCBackup markets is the unlimited cloud storage. While this feature is comparable to the best online data backup services, MyPCBackup's policy regarding what defines "unlimited" isn't comparable. If you have a lifetime's worth of home videos, photos and documents, you'll want a truly unlimited storage plan. However, if you read the terms and agreements, you'll discover that MyPCBackup will require you to cancel your account or upgrade to the business account if you exceed 500GB. This is the only "unlimited" plan that we reviewed with such a limited definition.
Another feature that you'll find marketed as "unlimited" is file versioning, or file archiving. File versioning is a backup feature that creates a backlog of file versions, allowing you to restore a file to various points in the files history. This feature mitigates user error by allowing you to return to versions of a file before mistakes or unwanted changes. The best online data backup services allow you to backup an unlimited number of versions. MyPCBackup's subscription only includes seven versions of a file. You have to purchase unlimited versioning separately.
Perhaps one of the biggest flaws with MyPCBackup is the very limited syncing abilities. While you can truly sync to an unlimited number of devices, you can only sync 2GB between those devices. You have to upgrade to 5GB, 10GB, 15GB or 20GB. You can't upgrade higher than 20GB of sync space without contacting the sales department for a custom quote. Every backup service that we reviewed didn't place such restrictions on the amount of data you can sync between your devices. The best cloud backup services only limit the amount of data you can sync to your subscribed storage plan.
One of the advantages that MyPCBackup has over many online data solutions is the multiple mobile apps. Not only can you sync your files to your iOS or Android mobile devices, but there are also apps for Windows Phone, Blackberry and the Kindle.
Another feature that not many data backup services include is a remote wipe option. This is a safety feature that allows you to delete data on a computer from a remote location. For example, if your laptop is stolen, you can log in to your online account and delete all of the backed up data from the laptop so that the thief doesn't have access to sensitive information that could lead to identity theft.
MyPCBackup has an intuitive interface with dependable backup features. However, the unlimited plan is really 500GB and you'll have to pay for much more than the initial subscription if you want features that would otherwise be included with the best online data storage services.
There are apps for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. A remote wipe feature allows you to delete data from a stolen computer.
The unlimited subscription plan is capped at 500GB. You can only sync 20GB between your devices. You have to upgrade for several features that are included with other services.
MyPCBackup's "unlimited" storage plan isn't truly unlimited, as it is capped at 500GB. If you want features that are comparable to the best online data backup services, you'll have to upgrade your features, which can quickly add up.
