Allmydata offers basic backup features, with unlimited storage for one low price. This service can provide automatic daily backups and can even backup open files. You can access your files using a web browser and they provide fairly decent server security.

Allmydata Standout Features:

  • Unlimited backup and bandwidth for one low price
  • 30-day free trial offered
  • iPhone version available

Backup Features:   Excellent

With this service you can configure automatic backups daily. It has a very simplistic file manager that uses a file structure that mimics how XP or Vista stores your files and it has a simple to understand transfer status bar so you can easily monitor the progress of your backup. However, we would like to see a scheduler that can schedule by other options, such as by the day or week. We would also like to see the product offer idle backups, file versioning and an image gallery.

Remote/ Mobile/ Web Access:   Excellent

Files can be accessed from any PC type computer through a standard browser; however, there is a charge per additional computer using one account. In addition, Allmydata has a Mac version in beta form that is not released as a stable product yet. They also provide a service specifically for iPhones that offers up to 1GB of backup for $9.99 per year.

Security:   Excellent

Allmydata will encrypt your files before transfer and they use secure https for transfers. Files on their servers are protected by their own encryption key and files are broken into portions before storage. They do not however report that they use geo-redundant storage.

Backup Space/ Price:   Excellent

Allmydata online backup services offers excellent pricing at $9.99 per month for unlimited storage and bandwidth. The iPhone service is $9.99 per year for 1GB.

Ease of Use:   Excellent

The dashboard or interface for this product is extremely simplistic. It will access your files and you simply mark which ones you want backed up. You can also configure scheduled backups by the day, however you can only configure what time you want the back ups to start and by what date. Most services will let you schedule by the hour, day or week. Also, when the schedule window appears you cannot go back to the main interface without selecting ok or cancel. And preferences are confusing, it offers things like log info and paths, cache paths and log upload metrics without explanations.

Help/Support:   Excellent

You can contact Allmydata by telephone or email and they post some information such as FAQs online. They also host a fairly active forum. However, if you click the help option through the dashboard it just simply refers you to the online information, no additional information like embedded support or a user manual is included. They also provide limited feature information online; you have to dig through the FAQs to learn more about the product.

Summary:

We like the pricing structure offered my Allmydata and it can provide basic backup services, however we would like to see support amped up, more schedule options and easier to understand preferences. For a more robust backup/storage solution, consider SugarSync, Dropbox or IBackup.
